Your bottom spreader dimensions are correct. You can buy replacement spars at World Wind Kites. Ask for Tye Harrison.
http://www.worldwindkites.com/store/
Spars are usually sold in lengths of 32" or longer, so you will have to cut off 3". Drimmel tools work best for cutting spars, but if you don't have a Drimmel tool, go to any store that sells arts and craft supplies, or a RC (radio control) store, and buy an "Exacto Saw blade". The exacto saw blade is very fine tooth and won't splinter the carbon fibers of the spar when cutting.
When cutting any spar with a saw blade, it's best to mark the place on the spar where you want to cut it, then before cutting, wrap the spar with electrical tape, masking tape, scotch tape, etc.. where the cut will be. Line the edge of the tape up on the mark, on the side of the spar you will be using. The tape will help prevent the spar from splintering when you make the cut.
When you contact World Wind Kites, ask Tye if he has any Desire UL bottom spreaders .157 that are already cut. If he doesn't, ask him politely, if he would cut it to correct length for you.
Also, you will need the plastic stopper that is glued on the end of the spar that is about 1 and a half inches from the end. If you can't pry off and reuse the stopper that is on the broken spar, then you'll need to order one when you order your spar. Or you can go to a hardware store and buy a short piece of black or clear vinyl tubing and slice off a thin piece to use to make a stopper. The same company that make the spars that are used in the Desire UL (Avia) also make excellent stoppers that snap into place. They are actually called "dohickies". LOL
BTW - It's always good to buy a few spare parts for each kite that you have, just in case something breaks or gets lost, so I recommend that when you order your repacement spar and stopper, that you order a few extra spars, stoppers, arrow nocks.
Having a kite with out spare parts, is like a Nascar race car driver without spare tires during a race. _________________ Troy Gunn - TKO Sport Kite Team - USA

I''m right behind you
Broke the bottom spreader on my Desire UL this afternoon. Pretty much vaporized inside the T-Ferrule.
Time to order a replacement spar and some spares. Definitely miss having a local store around at times like this. |

Gone With The Wind Kites (www.gwtw-kites.com) had pre-cut lower spreaders for the Desire as part of their normal stock, so I ordered three and the dohickies that go with them. UPS is showing my order should get to me by Monday.
I was going to recycle the broken lower spreader by removing/reusing the stand-off retainers and seeing if I had enough length left over (it broke right at the T-connector) to make an upper spreader out of it.
Even on windy days, I miss the Desire because it usually turns out to be the kite I fly before calling it a day as the winds down. It is sorely missed from the kite bag during its hiatus.
My French Connection arrived on Friday, but I am having some minor issues with it |
