New Tech Kites

Last weekend my girlfriend bought a Cherry Bomb and we flew a kite for the first time. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy my own so we could fly together and I could have something to do on the windy weekends. I was also very pleased with the Cherry Bombs abillity and durabillty and have set my intrest on another New Tech kite although I'm not very sure which one would be best for me. I'm intrested in getting a kite that is going to last me and that I can learn advance tricks on after I've gotten past the easier tricks although every review I read about any kite is mixed in opinion and abillity. It might be something you acquire from experience but I can't tell what make one kite better from the other.

I'm stuck between the Big Bang Pro, the Techno and the French Connection.

The Big Bang Pro seems like a great bargain but reviews I've read about it on other sites have been less than stellar so I'm very iffy on purchasing that one.

The French Connection is actually the only intimidating kite I've seen because of the added trinkets like the Yo-yo bars and roll cage when I'm not even sure what they are.

So I guess my best bet seems like the Techno but I was just hoping to get a little more insight before I make my purchase. My goal is to get a good overall kite that will last me a good few years since I can't see myself owning more than just one kite. I don't need a competition glider, just a nice kite that hopefully will keep me learning. Anyone know enough about these models to help me?

Techno! Big Bang would be a little advanced for a first kite although you could probably fly it. FC is my favorite, but it's a little more complicated than the techno. You'll be happy with the NT kites. By the way the Techno is a lot more kite than the Cherry Bomb. Bigger nicer to fly more capable of getting you farther.

I just had the same question. I ended up with a Techno. I've only been able to fly it once, but it seems like a great kite. My wife has a Prism Quantum and the Techno definitely feels more trickable. I contemplated the Big Bang and the FC. I ruled out the FC because I didn't want to destroy a kite that expensive (expect some broken pieces and/or torn sail learning- that quantum is supposed to be super durable but we managed to shatter the spine and break a leading edge during the first flight). Once I get more proficient (a few years down the road) I plan on buying a more expensive kite and I figure there wil be something new and better then. I shyed away from the BB Pro for the same reason as the FC. The reason I did not go with the BB was that it seems that fewer retailers are selling it so I figured that getting help or replacement parts might prove difficult in the future (that might be a totally bunk reason with no substance, but it is what I thought). Good luck and let us know what you get.

Edit- just to let you know where I am skills wise, I have flown a lot of foils and deltas a little. Still learning the basics for slack line tricks, but haven't crashed in some time and can fly pretty precisely.

Well I've officially ruled the FC out. Although I'm still not sure about the Big Bang Pro versus the Techno. What makes Big Bang (or any kite for that matter) harder to learn then other kites like the Techno?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The Big Bang is a little more pitch happy than the Techno, meaning the kite can be put on its back into a turtle very easily, put into fades, all those slack line pitch tricks where the nose is brought forward, backward, etc...These are not beginner tricks. The Big Bang does track nice and performs square cuts, but the Techno is better at standard maneuvers in my opinion. Both kites are framed in P200, so they are robust. Personally, I favor the Techno, since I enjoy 'old skool' precision flying with a dash of trickery mixed in.

You guys have been really helpful. The Techno seems like the way to go. If after a while I really want to upgrade, I'll go for the Big Bang Pro. Thanks a lot for the advice.

When you get ready to upgrade, really give the French Connection a hard look. It's the newer design and the Big Bang played a big part in it's development. It flys as good, and has the features of kites costing a lot more $. While the BB is good, my bet is that you would like the FC better.
