Hello all,
I am just getting into the sport. It all started with my 15month old son. He is at the age where he loves being outside. So I went and got a single line kite. took it to the backyard and gave it a go. He was so fixed on it, Now all he does is walk around and trys to say kite and points up into the air or at the kite hanging on his bedroom wall. Well any way, I invited my sister over with her two kids to fly the kite, well she stoped and picked up a kite from the dollar store little did she know that she picked up a stunt kite. So there I am in the backyard tring to fly this thing crashing into the ground and into the wooden fence. It was a blast.
So the next day I went to local hobby shop as there are no kite shops in town, Well I picked up the ignitor this was the best kite they carried. Well after playing with this kite.
OK here is where i need some guidance. As long as the wind is blowing I can keep this kite flying. But my problem is that the wind doesn't blow constant. Took kite to local fair grounds to fly. wind would blow, I launch the kite, kite will fly for about 30 sec to 1 min then wind would die and kite would fall to ground, I found myself having to walk backwards to keep it flying till the wind picked up again then do it all over again. I plan on picking up Dodd's DVD. But I was wondering if i should get a bigger kite that can handle the lighter winds, I have been looking at the Pyro XS.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hello Zydeco,
Thanks for the post. It is a basic law of kites that all else being equal, larger kites tend to fly better, especially in lighter winds. This is particularly true of sport kites. The Ignitor is a relatively small kite framed in solid fiberglass. It flies well for what it is. But you're correct, it needs a steady breeze of around 8 mph or more before it is fun. My only suggestion to improve performance is to let out ALL the line that came with it. Best to fly long line (80' - 100') to help catch the better winds you will find off the ground. Remember that objects in the path of the wind really disrupt the flow and make winds bumpy and gusty. Also, as your skill level progresses, you will be able to fly in lighter winds.
I'd recommend a Pyro XS for inland breezes. It has a big enough wingspan (nearly 6.5') to catch lighter winds. The frame is graphite, so the construction is light and durable. It also includes Spectra line, which is the best stuff for sport kites.
I hope this helps. Good winds to you!

HI Zydco, I agree with Chris' post, except I recommend for you next one, to go a bit larger, an all around sport kite, durable frame (skyshark P-200) the Techno priced around $80. which is a lot of kite for the money.
Best winds, and let me know what you decided on

thanks Chris and Dodd for the replies, I went ahead and got the pyro xs, Had to oder it online, due to there is not kite shops in my town(baton rouge, la). Should have it monday. which is cool since turkey season opens sat.
Dodd I was looking over the techno and the big bang since it came with the dvd. but opted for the the pyro. Since getting the ignitor, now everyday when i get home from work my son grabs the kite string and holds it over his head saying kite. So I fig once he gets old enough I will have the pyro for him to learn on.
Thanks

Zydeco, you may want to check out the Kite Fest Louisiane, Mar. 31 thru Apr. 1-2, to be held at the West Baton Rouge Soccer Complex on Rosedale. It'll be a great opportunity to see lots of 2-line stunt kites being flown by some of the best pilots around, as well as many other types of fascinating kites.

HEY HEY NOW...
What am I chop liver????
www.MeauxJoKites.com
A Proud Stocking dealer of New Tech Kites in the Baton Rouge area!!!
I have a Lare inventory but have yet to even put 1/4 of it up on the site yet, in expectations that a lot will sell during the Fest.
The Pyro XS IS a GREAT kite and when you can do some stuff with that one. The FC is an Awsome Little number, I have spent all weekend Flying it and putting in Spreaders... . It is an awsome Flyer and I was really surprised at it's lower wind range.
Also Check out the Greater baton Rouge Area Club and Forum here at
www.RedStickkiters.com
You can find more info about the Fest on the Club site, and you might want to think about the AKA if not already. You can find a link at the Kite Shop Website.

So I assumed there wasn't any. but anyway after dagnabbit posted about the fest, I did a search for it on the web and found out about you. well next time i am in the zachery area i will be stopping in.

Received the pyro Xs last week, All I can say about it, what a great kite for the money. But I did manage to break the lower leading edge, by pulling on it while kite was on the ground, guess I was trying to due too much too soon or I was very stupid. Anyway went to the local kite fest this weekend and Joe with meauxjo kites fixed me right up. also picked up the DVD from him. Now I have something to work from/with.
What I have done thou was shorten the lines by about half. Kite seems to be more responsive this way. is this usual with shorting the lines or will maybe adjusting bridle would fix this with longer lines. I am just learning all this stuff, but hey learning something new has always been fun for me.

I find the lines for the Pyro XS perfect for all kinds of flying, as a matter of fact I "borrow" Lesley's Pyro XS lines alot because I like them so much.
The Fest was a Blast and My pleasure on the Fix Zydeco. Dont forget about our local club forum!
We will have a Fun Fly on May 7th, check there for more info! |

Hi SKYWLKR,
Do you know the specification of the Pyro XS line set? How many pounds and feet? Spetra, Dyneema or Kevlar line? You're the 3rd one who said Pyro XS line set is very nice in most of the kite forum. Another flier in Prism forum said he flown his Quantum better with this line. Weird...? I wonder what so special with Pyro XS line set... I want to get one too... Thanks.

Thanks so much for the info, Chris. I'll look for this line set at GWTW online shop. How 'bout French Connection, Big Bang and Techno, are they also come with this line set? And do you know what the different between Spectra and Dyneema? Thanks.
BTW, is it true that Big Bang Pro had been disconnected? Why? I heard it's a very nice kite.

These kites come with 150# Spectra.
| ericska wrote: | | And do you know what the different between Spectra and Dyneema? |
There is no real difference in the material. Dyneema is the Euro brand name for Spectra.

The BB Pro is no longer being produced. It is a Big Bang with a polyester sail. _________________ "Fly a kite for a child and you entertain them for the day. Teach a child to fly a kite and you entertain them for life." |

Hello Troy, why every time I posting somewhere you always "pop" out...!?
I was just finished my new kite plan with the computer. I going to make a fast and noisy kite myself. I started at 10:00pm until now! And I usually sleep very late at 2:00am to 3:00am. My mum & neighbors like me sleeping late, cause no thieves dare to come. Really!
I have moved my office back home, so I don't have to open any shop in the morning anymore. I start my business at 10:00am in the morning.

Eric,
Apa Khabar? I was just teasing you about staying up so late. LOL
Often, I also stay up until 2 or 3 am. It's the best time to get peace and quiet away from the kids, since they're in bed asleep. LOL
Are you making the N.S. Radical from the plans I told you about? If you do, use Skyshark P400 for bottom spreaders, and P300 for leading edge and top spreader, and P400 for the spine, because the kite pulls hard in strong winds. The N.S. Rad is 8 ft (2.5m or 2.6m) wide. Use 200lb braided dacron for making the bridle lines. _________________ Troy Gunn - TKO Sport Kite Team - USA
