Finally got up the nerve to try the Spirit. Having read some rather negative things about it, I was a little hesitant to try it. One other time during the winter I put it together and tried to unwind the lines. Apparently I didn't unwind them correctly as they were all four on the same winder. I had a mess of tangled line and the air was cold, so I just gave up. Later I got all the lines straightened out and then used two winders with a pair lines on each winder. Now I don't have to worry about getting them tangled.
The day is sunny and the wind is a fairly steady 6 mph. I have read the way to launch a quad kite is by tipping the top of the handles back. I did that and the kite went right into the air. I practiced bringing it back down to the ground by tipping the tops of the handles forward, and it worked fine. I was expecting to have a serious crash, but it just didn't happen. In just moments I was able to hold one handle steady and tip the other one in to do a spin. Then by just doing the opposite handle I could unwrap the lines.
It was easy to fly horizontally across the window and then turn and go the other way. I could stop the kite's forward motion and back it up and make it spin whenever I wanted. I was lucky not to have any crashes.
As I flew it, I found that it can be flow just like a regular two line kite also. Just hold the handles steady and move the arms back and forth to do any of the patterns you can do with a regular two line stunt kite. I was very surprised that it would do that. Of couse you have to launch and land it by tipping the handles, but once in the air it can become a two line kite.
I practiced flying it both ways and was lucky enough to fly about 30 minutes without a crash.
After reading so many negative things about the kite, I didn't think I would get any enjoyment from it, but I will have to say that for my first time with a quad, it was really fun. Definitely I need lots of practice, but now I can fly it without being afraid of destroying the kite.
It's probably nothing like a Revolution, but it is a fun kite, and I found the handles that come with it to be quite easy to use. I can see now why the ad says that it's easy to go from a two-line kite to a Spirit Quad. _________________ Jim |
