If you've heard about Dave Shankman's famous Kite Party (www.kiteconnection.com) at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, then you know what a good vibe can come from a casual get together of kiting enthusists at a cool beach location. Folks from the East Coast began to think about having their own 'kite party'. Hence, the ECKP is born. Buxton, North Carolina August 5th-7th, 2005. Please be aware this is a very losely organized (non)event. No rules, restrictions, clip boards, or heavy organization. Bring your friends, family, kites, camping gear, coolers, & susnscreen to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in August. The little town of Frisco will be the area most will be staying.

http://www.outer-banks.com/friscowoods/ - a popular windsurf / kite surf destination. Camping isn’t cheep though…over $30 in season. But located right on the sound.

Camping on the National Seashore could be great.
For those that don't mind the great outdoors, there are tent sites snuggled in the dunes, a short distance from the ocean. That means we can fly right around camp.
See you there!

Hi Chris,
We'll have some kites for people to try and hotdogs if anyone is hungry. We'll also be taking KAP pix of course.
For anyone wondering, the picture above is of the campground, not the flying area. The photo was taken with their back to the beach and ocean. The beach is rather wide down there compared to the northern OBX.
See you there. _________________ www.jonesairfoils.com |

| Mike reports that the beach near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse is nice and wide. It looks as if that is where we gather and fly most of the time. |

There are lots of places to fly kites there but this is where we go most often. Are people flying at Frisco Woods or the NPS camground? Those are different places. This is the old lighthouse site beach access. If the wind is west then the sound side is more appropriate. Maybe even an Ocracoke invasion. Here is a picture of Lori flying a 12-pack of .Six looking north on 4th of July weekend from about 70' AGL from my kite aerial photography platform. As you can see it's not crowded on the busiest weekend of the summer and the beach is wide and stays that way on south to the Cape. Where we are flying there are no other people south of us in this picture which stretches about 1 mile before the Cape itself. I have a shot facing south showing how much room but it's blurry. I'll post if interested.

Ok here is a blurry shot facing to the south. This was taken on July 3rd as the one above. The camera is about 100' AGL in this one I would guess. This is just after high tide. I'd estimate there is 250' before you're standing in water, but it may be more. Wind is lab grade.

I'm thinking of smoking a couple of pork shoulders and making up some slaw instead of hotdogs and leaving the grill open for people to put whatever they want to cook on it or they're welcome to some Carolina Q. When the Q is gone, it's gone. We'll have a big thermos of Gatorade too. _________________ www.jonesairfoils.com |

Thanks for all the great food Mike. The BBQ was outstanding. Needless to say, everyone had a great time on the beaches of Hatteras. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse makes a great backdrop for kite flying. The ocean temperature was a perfect 79 degrees. I took many great photographs...here are a few. I'll try to get more up on our gallery before the end of the month.
Until next year!
