Are most nocks glued to the leading edge spar or just pressure fit on (or does it vary based on the manufacturer)?
If glued, is there any simple way to get it off in case you snap a nock tine doing a tip stab (or are you stuck replacing the spar)? Curiousity is a terrible thing...

I believe most are glued on. It is too easy to lose parts that are not glued. To remove a nock, try using a flat head screw driver or a razor blade to sheer it off. To help prevent such an occurance, try placing an end cap over your nock to protect it.
Cheers,

Thanks for the info, Chris. Actually, I was quite surprised to find out that the local Lowes and Home Depot carry end caps, which I was able to find in the right size for my Desire. They are located with the nuts and bolts, and referred to as "screw protectors."
All the best,

Sam,
I also discovered the same thing at Lowes a few years ago, by accident. The rubber end caps I found here, are white, and there are three size in each plastic bag. They were only about $3 per bag, and each bag contains about 100 end caps. Quite cheap, if you compare the price to kite store prices per cap. _________________ Troy Gunn - TKO Sport Kite Team - USA

Others to add to the "Kite Supplies in the Misc. Aisle" category:
Nocks (depending on style) - your local archery supply store.
Swivels - Your local fishing supply store
Kite Straps - Forget standard Velcro (which has a high snag quotient). For strapping purposes Velcro makes something much better, but not as widely publicized. It's called One Wrap. Depending on width (3/8" - 2"), a 25 yards roll goes for between $10-$35. Since you can cut it to any length you want, that's a lot of kite straps.
Kite Box - Snowboard case/ (Telescoping)Fishing Rod Case
Yeah.... we've been getting a lot of rain.
Hope you get some airtime this weeked,
Sam
Raptors and kites tomorrow - two fer! Hope the weather holds. |

If you don't (or can't) collapse the leading edges, there is no need to glue them the next time. The LE-tensioning is holding them in place anyway.

I break down the leading edges about 50% of the time and currently I only have one kite that has a really long leading edge that's a one-piece unit (but it's too pretty to fault it for that).
In the end, I just glued the nock back on because the kite comes with endcaps and removing the endcap to release tension on the leading edge for storage, generally pulled off the nock too.

Hmmf. I've lost a supposedly glued-on nock when a slightly-too-low ground-pass ripped it off. |

A ground-sweep is originally what knocked the nock off. Not particularly fast, but it's a pretty big kite so there was a fair amount of inertia behind it. Needed some glue for the kite medkit anyway
