A good, cheap tail to use would be surveyor's tape- you can pick it up at any hardware store. Might be a bit heavy though. Ripstop nylon ribbon works best. There are several places you can look... http://www.worldwindkites.com, http://www.intothewind.com/. You can get nicer tails than just a plain ribbon, depends on how much you want to spend. I've flown my PyroXS with a Transition Tail from G-Kites. Another option would be a plastic polyethylene tube tail, like they put on Trlbys. They inflate and look really neat. They also slow the kite way, way down. Hope this helps.

These tails may have too much drag, especially in the lower wind range for the PyroXS. This might work better- a tubular poly tail (http://www.intothewind.com/shop/Stunt_Kites/Other_Stunt_Kite_Accessories/50-ft._Stunt_Tail)
I'm trying to find the ripstop ribbon tails- I have some tails from an old kite stack I bought in the 80's, one of them is on my son's Cherry Bomb and it works really nice- the littlest amount of wind resistance, and the tail looks great.
Crepe paper ribbon (from a party store and the like) works great, really lightweight, and it's really cheap. Try flying a 100 ft ribbon!
Like I said before, I have flown my PyroXS with a Transition Tail. These tails are pretty light, and look great. The 24 foot version can be found here: http://www.coastalkites.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Store_Code=247&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=TT24X&Category_Code=TAILS
and you'll find links to the 48ft and 96 ft versions at the bottom of the page. The 48ft version would be a little tough to fly except in the upper wind ranges for the PXS, and I wouldn't recommend the 96' version at all.
Just my opinion, your mileage may vary, as they say.

Oscar,
I have not flown the Pyro XS, but I have flown my pair of the older Pyros a lot. As a matter of fact the Pyro was my first stunt kite. I have enjoyed flying them with tube tails, they really do look better in the sky when they inflate! You will need a little more wind for the kite to drag around the tail, but not that much more. The new Pyro XS is a larger kite than mine so I am assuming that it has more pull.
Send Dodd an email, he will know about the differences in the Pyros.

If you are looking for something different try using the newtech wind art, tube tails or wind socks. I fly some larger kites and have had good luck with those. On a windy day they will slow down the kite, without the need for brakes. However they do not do well for any kind of slack line tricks. Be forewarned, on a low wind day they will seriously reduce the responsiveness of your kite. The best bit of advice I have is to start to experiment with what works the best for your kite and your flying style. _________________ restless wind |
